Merrow 70-D3B-2 Butt Seam Machine
Join Materials in a continuous process with a flat 16mm (5/8") single thread stitch at high-speed using the most dependable and servicable sewing machine on the planet. Tested in the industry for 50 years and currently used in more than 10,000 factories around the world, the 70-D3B-2 is the most successful butt-seam sewing machine ever built. Merrow have designed this machine specifically for the endwise joining of materials. The Merrow 70-D3B-2 has been constructed from the ground up to be versatile, adaptable, servicable and fast.

Fabrics & Processes
The 70-D3B-2 (and variations) will sew: woven fabric, knit fabric, terry towel, denim, technical textiles, and nonwovens. It is used in the following processes: continuous bleaching, mercerising, scouring, washing, drying, pad and steam dyeing, printing, steaming, shrinking (sanforizing), finishing, tubular processing, slitting and de-twisting, heat setting, singeing, calendering, napping and shearing.
Machine Options/Variations
CNP (Chemically Nickel Plated - For Wet Sewing)
The Merrow 70-D3B-2 CNP industrial sewing machine is designed to sew in harsh environments. It produces the same flat butted seam that has made the 70-D3B-2 the industry standard for end-to-end seaming, but has been chemically nickel plated (CNP) to allow for sewing on wet fabric.
Chemically adhering the nickel to the machine offers the utmost protection from corrosion, and like all Merrow machines the 70-D3B-2 CNP is hand assembled with high quality steel parts, ensuring a perfect butted seam even after years of use.
Merrow uses a proprietary method of nickel plating that covers 100% of the sewing machine. The process doesn't chip and prevents oxidation. The parts for a Merrow nickel plated machine are all specially manufactured to accommodate the proprietary nickel coating applied. The 70-D3B-2 CNP is often used in wet environments such as dyeing and finishing plants. Specifically in the following operations; bleaching, dying, mercerising, washing and printing operations . It operates on a table or a railway, and is often paired with Merrow's air motor.
HP (High Pile - For Thick Fabrics)
High Pile fabrics require more clearance for the cutting system and a higher looper stroke. The Merrow 70-D3B-2 HP is designed to sew material up to 2" thick. Merrow has modified the cutting system, the feed system and introduced a new looper for the HP machine allowing it to sew between 1200RPM and 2250RPM on high pile material. The 70-D3B-2 HP has been tested on paint roller fabrics, air filtration fabrics, insulation and foam products.
LS (Locked Stitch - For A Stronger Seam)
The Merrow 70-D3B-2 LS industrial sewing machine creates a two-thread butted seam on woven and non-woven goods. The second thread acts as a 'locked-stitch' and is designed to lock the joining stitches in place. The LS model creates an effective end-end seam for operations that require added security or for fabrics that will undergo a napping process.
70-Y3B-2 (Stitch Multiplyer - For Stitch Condensing)
Activated by a lever on the front of the machine, the stitch count can be doubled while the operator is sewing and is effective for processing loose weaves to higher density fabrics. Wide seams of joined fabric are weak at the edges (the selvages) and the 70-Y3B-2 addresses this by doubling the stitch count on demand to add strength to seams, when and where it’s needed.
GAP (Provides A Spaced Seam Between The Joined Fabrics)
The Merrow 70-D3B-2 G industrial sewing machine produces a single-thread butted gap seam, specifically designed for the end to end seaming of woven and non-woven material. The machine sews a 5/8” stitch with a physical gap (approximately 1/32”-1/16” wide) between the ends of joined fabric. This stitch is effective for applications that require drainage or seam detection between pieces of fabric. The 70-D3B-2 G can also be used in the processing of thick fabric, where it allows a seam to lay flat under the tension.
RAIL (For Automated Butt Seaming)
Combining with an automatic track enables the machine to traverse automatically, de-skills the sewing operation and reduces manual handling during the sewing process. The Merrow rail sewing head will fit sewing railways such as those made by Montimac in Italy. Railway operations create straighter more consistent seams across wide fabrics.
